This event has been organised in order to raise funding to support the United Estates of Wythenshawe (UEW) and their quest to build a boxing gym to help keep children away from brutal violance, drugs and crime from what was once voted britain's most deprived housing estate. The initiative is working as order has been restored throughout the estate simply by the efforts of one man, his friends, their hard work and their dreams.....

GREG DAVIS....

When GREG DAVIS heard that the Methodist Chapel in Manchester he had attended since childhood was facing closure he had no hesitation in taking it on. 'It was a do or die situation,' he says, and do he certainly did. It was deemed unsustainable to renovate the building as a place of worship, as vandalism had taken it's toll but Davis had a vision of creating something else that would bring the community together. And so the United Estates of Wythenshawe (UEW) was born, a unique social centre at the heart of Benchill, the most deprived council estate in England
When Greg passed the Church one night he found 15 kids in the grounds and on the roof. Being tired he spoke to them more harshly than normal...Why were they climbing on the roof? Hadn't they anything better to do? Didn't they realise they looked menacing in such numbers? The situation calmed down and Greg gradually started chatting to them, telling them his experiences as a bouncer and how he used to have to get fit and work out in a gym. He gave them the opportunity to come the next day and help him build the roof and help with the Gym project he had in mind for the Church. The next day all 15 of them came to help.
The gym was an overnight success for the whole area as it literally brought a whole community together as Greg and his cohorts of local ex-bouncers, pub landlords and the likes set about re-establishing the status quo of their estate. The gym on it's own was not enough to establish the level of changes needed so they helped set up small businesses for some of the local youths who had maybe dropped out of school or failed in society for one reason or another. The gym helped them find a purpose in life and small businesses such as a car wash, hairdressers etc were created to earn them some money.

Boredom stopped, vandalism stopped, violence stopped, drug abuse stopped ...childrens lives were being regenerated over-night.
Greg has no time to ponder on what he has achieved so far as he is too busy building the path forward. He has ambition to re-create his gym in other deprived areas in other cities and is already working with other such community leaders.
He needs to build a boxing gym to complete his Wythenshawe project and bring in more of the local children, distracting them from the crime ridden lifestyles which were once so prevalent.
We will help him achieve his aims.
There is a well established boxing community in Wythenshawe but they have NO permanent base in which to train.2004 Olympic Games Manchester's Amir Khan wins Silver Medal
